Independent Reading Ideas

I'd like you to post one or two ideas for your independent projects. Think about what you've done in the past that you've liked, or something you've never had the chance to do but would love to try. As you post your ideas, please address the following questions:

1. What should be the goal of our independent reading projects? In other words, why are we doing them? For what purpose?

2. What criteria should we use to assess how "good" an independent reading project is?

Thanks for your ideas!

A complete favorite of mine is giving a book talk. This involves going up infront of the class and talking about a book that I have read and I really think that it is a really great way to get people axcited about reading.

I think a good goal for these projects is to get rid of the old book reports and to be able to gain a deeper understanding of life through books.

I think that if the project left you wanting to take the book out of their hands and to start reading it right then and there then it was a really good project.

1. I think the goal of the independent reading project is for us to keep reading things besides what we read for school, so we keep reading after schools over. It also allows us to find books we are interested.

2. I think good projects should be creative and really show that we understood the book, and even liked it.

The goal of our independent reading projects should be to tell the class about our books, and our favorite parts. So we should maybe try and persuade the class to read your book.

2. I think the projects should be really fun and have us do something that is exciting, not just standing in front of the class and tell about your book.

I think that the goal for the independent reading is for us yo be able to read at a level that we can read at also so we understand what the book is talking about.

The project in my perspective should be sompething creative, unique and something that people will remeber and so that people can understand.

-I like doing something artistic for it such as drawing or sketching an important scene in the book.
-I think compiling songs to a cd that reflect important events/people from the book you read would be neat also.
1. I think these projects help to make sure we understand the material, and they make books sound interesting.
2. A good project would be one that entertains the audience enough to possibly read the book. These projects should have our liking for the book shining through it.

I have really liked creating book jackets, drawings, t-shirts; something that makes you be creative and still incorporate your book.
I think a good goal for these projects is to be able to convey the main idea of the book and help other's get an understanding of the book.
I think that if the project left people excited to read the book, then it was a good project-like Nathan.

One of my all time favorite independent reading projects that I have done in the past is a cereal box. On the nutrition facts side you summarize your book, on the other panel you analyze and the back is up to you. I always did a little game about the book.

I think the goal of this independent reading project should be to show our knowledge and understanding of what we read. Also show that we can analyze and think deeper about things that we've read on our own.

I think we should grade each others projects. Like have a independent reading project day and go around read and turn in peer editing sheets. I think this would be great because since we do them we could really tell how much effort was put into each one.

I love to do projects that are creative. Last semester I did a though box for a character in my book showing some of her thoughts throughout the book. Creative projects are fun because I dont feel that I have to worry and analizize it so much; it can just be fun and full of meaning.
1) The independent reading projects are important to show that you read a book, and to be able to know a little about it. It is also to improve your understanding of what you read to make sure that you read the book, not just the words.
2) Any project should show that they spent time on it and didnt do it in just 10 minutes. You should also be able to tell kind of what the book is about.

For my last reading project I enjoyed making a new cover for the book with a summary of book and some backround info on the author. I felt that made me complete the book and not just go online and read about it.

I think the goal of these projects is to keep reading even though you may not have a book to read for school but just for something to do in your free time/

1)The point of indepent reading is so that we can read somthing we like, and excercise our brains.

2) I think a good project purpose should be the same as why we read.

HI MRS. KAKLAIRE!

I would really like to make a movie. Although it is very hard to do it would be quite fun. Another thing that I would like to make is a shoe box model of a scene in the book with a couple of quotations on the back along with a summary of the book.

I think that the goal of the books that we read by our selfs allow us to read something we enjoy.(It would be alot better if we could do a book report on an artical from a magazine)

I think that the projects should be creative and stand out. They should not be boring to watch and should persuade us to read the book.

I think the goal of our independent reading books is for us to be able to learn to read books outside of school and enjoy them.

A good project would have to be fun, creative, and have to show your understanding of the book.

I like doing creative pieces, not just a summary or compare and contrast. It is fun to make posters. It is ok to compile data like for a summary, but do other things like make a poster, shirt, or acting out scenes.

1.) I think the goal of a independent reading book is to take away more than just what it says, but on a deeper level, and to do it on your own, not just for school.

2.) I think that they should be graded on how much we took away and how much effort we put into the project.

I think that we do independent reading books to expand our horizons in reading. It makes us learn about different things that happen ot could happen in the world. I like them beacuse we can read at out own paces and enjoy reading a book that we can get into.

I like when we do creative and art related projects to show that we understood the book and enjoyed making something to show to the class and try to encourage them to read the book.

I think for the independent reading project we should do somethings that might not be considered "normal" english project, after all we arent a normal english class! ;)some of my ideas are to make a cd that has songs on it that can be related to your book, or making a collage of pictures relating to your book and then explaining why each picture is significant to the book.

1. I think the reason that we are doing the indepentent reading books is to get us to read outside of school. I also think we are doing it because it allows us to be independent from class...hints the INDEPENDENT reading book! :)

2.I think a good project will make us want to consider reading the book because the person has done such a good job showing the class why it is good.

I like doing book talks as well as Nathan (more on this later).

1. I think that the reason we should do independent reading projects is to inform the class about an interesting book that you have read. Therefore I don't like the projects you just "turn in". I think that book talks are a really nice way to accomplish this.

I think that as far as the criteria goes, Nathan couldn't have said it any better! If it gets you really excited about the book and isn't thrown together at the last minute (a mistake of mine last time...), then it should be graded as such.

I want to make a video of some kind. Or some other media presentation like that. I just want to do something a little different from the norm. That’s all that I’ve thought into it. But I think the overall goal of the projects should be to portray your feelings about the book and to kind of give a little sneak preview into it to encourage people to, or not to read it.

I think that the projects should only be graded on two things: creativity and how long it looks like it took them to make.

1. -My idea for an independent reading project isd drawing a detailed picture with quotes to describe our book.
2. I think the project should be creative, detailed, easy to understand, and coloraful

Something I liked was making a movie poster for a book we read and someone brought in food so that was always cool!

The goal of our reading book is pretty much that we read it and create an opinion of it afterwards.

I think if its creative of enjoyable then it should be a good grade. If it looks like some one bs'd it then give them a bad grade. We should have to tell you what the book was about in person not on a piece of paper.
