I think, responding to saryn, that he was still upset about it and didn't want to talk about it, especially to strangers, so he didn't mention it at all to Amir.
In response to Saryn, I think he struggled with the fact that his daughter did not want to live anymore. It was probably to painful to bring up and then have to explain. He probably does not tell random people a whole lot about his personal life.
Answering Saryn's question i think that he was ashamed and didnt want it getting out that his daughter was not happy and that kind of relects on the parents when the child commits suicide.
Why does Sohrab feel such an attachment to Amir? We know that they are related, but Sohrab has really become close with Amir. When he tries to commit suicide in the bathtub, do you think this method of suicide had to do with his relationship with Amir?
For Molly's question I think without a doubt things between Sohrab and AMir would have been much better because Sohrab would not have felt betrayed by Amir
In response to Molly's question, I think things would be a lot better between Sohrab and Amir because Sohrab was actually smiling and talking to Amir, but after Sohrab heard about going back to an orphanage, he felt hurt again.
well saryn, I think he feels less inclined to mention his daughter due to the lack of relevance!!!!! I dont believe the situation called for personal mumbo and for the man to inquire on his daughter is absolutely poposterous...
In reference to Molly. i this it would be rocky at first because Sohrab would want to talk, but after a little time i think that they would have been closer
In response to Jessie, I think that Sohrab is attached to Amir becuase Amir saved him from Assef, and he found out that they are related and that Amir can bring him to a better place.
IN RESPONSE TO WHAT MOLLY SAID: I think Amir never mentioned the orphanges because he promised him that he would never go back. Plus when he was at an orphange he was taken away and given to Assef. Oviously it's not a safe place and he wont feel safe there.
In response to Molly, Amir needed to be honest with Sohrab about the orphanages. If he had not mentioned them, Sohrab probably would have commited suicide within one of the orphanages.
In repsonse to Jessie's question, he feels such an attatchment to Amir because the suicide attempt because he felt like he could hold onto to something again, and not lose it, like he lost his father Hassan. I'm not so sure how to relate the suicide method and relationship.
In response to Jesse's question I think that the reason why Sohrab tried to commit suicide was because he in fact didnt have a good relationship with Amir but was just his last resort and was forced to like him.
in reference to Jesse, i this there is an attachment beacuse they are related and they feel the need to be closer. so the suicide just made them closer in a way. They both now feel like they have saved each other.
I think the reasons Sohrab's new family didn't help him get over his depression because they felt an emptiness because Sohrab was not their biological child.
In responce to Molly's question I dont think that Amir and Sorya didnt try to help Sohrab overcome his mode of "depression" because they felt that if they did things may just get worse and something might happen that they really dont want to.
In response to glen, I think that this was a happy ending because it showed that Sohrab is starting to recover, and now things might start to change, and life might come back into Sohrabs life.
IN RESPONSE TO JESSICA'S QUESTION: I think he feel's an attachment to Sohrab because he see's his old friend Hassan in him, he is reminded of him. Like what Molly said, he saved him from Assef. Plus he finally got a son that he and his wife couldn't have.
In response to Molly's question I think that they just didnt want to make thing worse and just wanted him to try and get over it by himself. They just felt like they didnt want to make things worse.
In response to Molly, I think both Amir and Soyraya did not help Sohran with his depression because they did not know how to handle it. They have never been parents before, and I do not think they fully understood that Sohran was experiencing depression. They could have thought that theese feelings would soon pass.
In response to Jess that amir may think that suicide was his fault and that he think's he could have tried to stop him from committing it and that he was there for him and he had some one to talk to him.
I liked the ending of the story because it was surprising to me when Sohrab tried to commit suicide and it was not the exact classic ending that is just boring and normal.
IN RESPONSE TO JESSICA: I agree with Jessica. They only have an idea of what Sohran has been through. This kid does need help but he also needs time. If they pry to early he might never tell them what he's really feeling or try to committ sucide again.
Why didn't Amir consider that Sohrab was so depressed when he told Sohrab he might have to go back toan orphanage? He even went to sleep, knowing how upset Sohrab was.
I really liked the ending. I think that it was very fitting that he was running of into the wind to go get the kite. It is almost that he accepts his past and is glad that he and Sohrab have found something to do together that Sohrab smiled about.
I keep hearing people bring up the ending--maybe it didn't end happily enough? Why do you think the author chose this ending? Considering the state of this country and of the people that come from or inhabit it, would it have been fitting/ appropriate to end this story happily?
In response to Molly's question I think that he just did not really understand how he was feeling and how bad of conditions there where at the orphanage.
I think that it was a mixture of hope and guilt. Hope was in the beginning of the book and through the middle and guilt was at the end. I think that the end was saying that good things happen to good people.
I didnt like the book because it was sad and didnt have a happy ending. I dont like reading things that make me sad :( I hope the next book is happier!
In response to Molly, again I think Amir really did not comprehend what Sohran was going through. Amir was also still recovering from a near death experience, was probably tired and went to sleep. It was definitely a learning experience for Amir. He probably never again fell asleep when Sohran was upset.
IN RESONSE TO MOLLY'S QUESTION: I think that Amir doesnt fully understand everyones feelings because he has been hiding feelings and trying to ignore some and forget. There were so many bad feelings that he has just ignored not to get hurt but he didnt realize that telling Sohrab he would have to go to an orphanage is like sending him back to his death sentance.
IN RESPONSE TO JESSCIA'S QUESTION: As soon as you find out about Hassan's son I knew that Amir was going to end up with the kid. It was a way to redeem himself for all the things that he did to Hassan. How he was going to end up with him I wasn't sure. I wasn't expecting Assef to come back in but it was like his battle to protect Hassan. He fought him to save Hassan.
in response to gaffney the end was something that people expect something good to happen and we just thought wrong and that the end brought the whole book together and know I unbderstand why the book was broken down like that
I think the author chose this ending because the story needed something happy. The whole story has seemed to have "fake happy moments" because everything seems happy, and then it all just crumbles. Like when Amir and Sohrab almost left the house where Assef was without getting hurt, but then Assef told them they would have to fight for it. With all of the depression in this story, I think the author realized he needed to give the readers some happiness.
I thought the ending was ok. I dont think it was happy enough. It just ends with a smile. i think nit should have ended with they talking a finally starting to share each others thougths.
In repsonse to Jessie: The ending of the book was a littlet suprising, but in the end, what I was expecting. All the signs of Sohrab's depression were there, it was just a matter of time before he snapped, and he did.
In response to lgaffney, I would say that the ending of the book was fitting for the state that the country is in at this time. I think the author did end this to bring up this feeling from the country.
In reponse to lgaffney...the way the book ended was just perfect..tho it wasnt happy ever after..it shows that indeed amir has finally redeem himself and is in the process of starting new...telling sohrab "a thousand time over" proves that no matter what there is always a chance for redeeming yourself...which is one of the big purpose of the book..to show that your past will catch up wit u but it up to you to free yourself..and tho sohrab didnt say a word..the hint of smile was the hope amir was looking for...

Alright are you guys ready to start another amazing fish bowl? Lets do it!
What do you think about the suicide?
Why do you think the man Amir went to see about Sohrab's adoption did not mention his daughter after Amir asked the question "do you have children?"
I think, responding to saryn, that he was still upset about it and didn't want to talk about it, especially to strangers, so he didn't mention it at all to Amir.
I think the suicide forshadowed Sohrab's distance from everyone in the world.
I dont think he mentioned his daughter because he had lost her to suicide and did want to bring it up because it is a sore subject for him
In response to Saryn, I think he struggled with the fact that his daughter did not want to live anymore. It was probably to painful to bring up and then have to explain. He probably does not tell random people a whole lot about his personal life.
In response to Saryns question I think he is afraid of somthing happening to his daugher if he said that he had one.
IN RESPONSE TO WHAT SARYN ASKED: I think he didn't mention it because he felt responsible for the sucide becasue he was his own child.

Answering Saryn's question i think that he was ashamed and didnt want it getting out that his daughter was not happy and that kind of relects on the parents when the child commits suicide.
Do you think if Amir had never mentioned orphanages to Sohrab, if things would be better between Amir and Sohrab

Saryn Maybe he would have been shocked if something would have happened to his daughter
well saryn, I think he feels less inclined to mention his daughter due to the lack of relevance!!!!! I dont believe the situation called for personal mumbo and for the man to inquire on his daughter is absolutely poposterous...
In response to Molly's question I think that either way if he had mentioned the orphans or not it would have turned out to be the same.
In reference to Molly. i this it would be rocky at first because Sohrab would want to talk, but after a little time i think that they would have been closer

To jessies question. I think that they are so close because they can finally trust eachother and get along.
In response to Molly, Amir needed to be honest with Sohrab about the orphanages. If he had not mentioned them, Sohrab probably would have commited suicide within one of the orphanages.
in responses to molly's question the relationship between the two of them would have been different and they would not be fighting with each other.

Do you think this is a happy srory or a bad one?
why don't Amir and Soraya try to help Sohrab get over his depression? It seems like they just let him be while they were in America.
I think sorab feels connected to amir because he knew his father and he was sort of a friend.
in reference to Jesse, i this there is an attachment beacuse they are related and they feel the need to be closer. so the suicide just made them closer in a way. They both now feel like they have saved each other.

I think it is almost happy story but it has a lot of irony and makes it sort of sad.
In response to Molly's question I think that they just didnt want to make thing worse and just wanted him to try and get over it by himself. They just felt like they didnt want to make things worse.
In response to Molly, I think both Amir and Soyraya did not help Sohran with his depression because they did not know how to handle it. I agree with ben

I think it fits well because Sohrab is a mirror image of hassan and flying kites fits well because that is what hassan liked to do
In response to Molly, again I think Amir really did not comprehend what Sohran was going through. Amir was also still recovering from a near death experience, was probably tired and went to sleep.
