In reponse to lgaffney...the way the book ended was just perfect..tho it wasnt happy ever after..it shows that indeed amir has finally redeem himself and is in the process of starting new...telling sohrab "a thousand time over" proves that no matter what there is always a chance for redeeming yourself...which is one of the big purpose of the book..to show that your past will catch up wit u but it up to you to free yourself..and tho sohrab didnt say a word..the hint of smile was the hope amir was looking for...

In response to lgaffney, I would say that the ending of the book was fitting for the state that the country is in at this time. I think the author did end this to bring up this feeling from the country.

I think the author chose this ending because the story needed something happy. The whole story has seemed to have "fake happy moments" because everything seems happy, and then it all just crumbles. Like when Amir and Sohrab almost left the house where Assef was without getting hurt, but then Assef told them they would have to fight for it. With all of the depression in this story, I think the author realized he needed to give the readers some happiness.

IN RESPONSE TO JESSCIA'S QUESTION: As soon as you find out about Hassan's son I knew that Amir was going to end up with the kid. It was a way to redeem himself for all the things that he did to Hassan. How he was going to end up with him I wasn't sure. I wasn't expecting Assef to come back in but it was like his battle to protect Hassan. He fought him to save Hassan.

I think that Amir doesnt fully understand everyones feelings because he has been hiding feelings and trying to ignore some and forget. There were so many bad feelings that he has just ignored not to get hurt but he didnt realize that telling Sohrab he would have to go to an orphanage is like sending him back to his death sentance.

In response to Molly, again I think Amir really did not comprehend what Sohran was going through. Amir was also still recovering from a near death experience, was probably tired and went to sleep. It was definitely a learning experience for Amir. He probably never again fell asleep when Sohran was upset.

I think that it was a mixture of hope and guilt. Hope was in the beginning of the book and through the middle and guilt was at the end. I think that the end was saying that good things happen to good people.

I really liked the ending. I think that it was very fitting that he was running of into the wind to go get the kite. It is almost that he accepts his past and is glad that he and Sohrab have found something to do together that Sohrab smiled about.

They have never been parents before, and I do not think they fully understood that Sohran was experiencing depression. They could have thought that theese feelings would soon pass.
